Adding Access Restrictions

Note: Not all activities support access resection.
Access Restrictions are supported on Quizzes, Project Quizzes, SBAs, Labs, and Topics.
They are not supported by stand alone knowledge checks and 'slide style' case studies.
Case studies can be converted into a quiz style activity upon request.

Adding Access Restrictions to Activities:

  1. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the page.
  2. Select "Turn editing on" from the drop-down menu.
  3. Scroll down to locate the activity you want to modify.
  4. Click on the gear icon in the top right.
  5. Choose "Edit settings" from the options.
  6. Scroll down to the "Restrict access" section. It is typically near the bottom
  7. Click on the "Restrict access" drop-down to expand it.
  8. Select the "Add restriction..." option
  9. From the Add restriction... pop-up, choose from 1 of 6 constraints
    • Activity completion: Require students to complete (or not complete) another activity.
    • Date: Prevent access until (or from) a specified date and time.
    • Grade: Require students to achieve a specified grade.
    • Group: Allow only students who belong to a specified group, or all groups.
    • User Profile: Control access based on fields within the student's profile. (not suggested)
    • Restriction Set: Add a set of nested restrictions to apply complex logic.

    • Further restrictions may be added by clicking the 'Add restriction' button again, and it is possible to specify that ALL the conditions or ANY of the conditions are required before the activity is made available. Thus, it is possible to use 'Or' as well as 'And' conditions. See Using Conditional activities for an example.
  10. Each setting will have it's own set of variables to be set
  11. To delete a restriction, select the gray x to the right of the restriction
  12. You can select the gray eye next to a restriction to cross it out. This hide the activity to users who do not meet the restriction(s) added.
    • The eye also affects to the visibility of the activity in the gradebook:
    • If the eye is SHUT the activity won't appear in the gradebook if the user currently doesn't meet that part of the condition
    • If the eye is OPEN the activity will show up in the gradebook (and eventually also its grade) even if the user currently doesn't meet that part of the condition.
  13. Please note that licenses last for a full year, so if an additional set of students are added for a second semester, you will have to update any restrictions. There is no mass update or clear restrictions button.
  14. Return to the top of the page and click the gear icon again.
  15. Select "Turn editing off" to exit the editing mode.
